The Southern Hills Triathlon, register here, the race with something for everyone, will take place this coming Saturday, September 2, at Angostura Reservoir, near Hot Springs. The folks from out west know what a hidden gem they have for a race, with so many reasons to attend.
Different Distances & Events:
The race has a duathlon (3.1 mile run, 12 mile bike, 3.1 mile run), sprint-distance triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 12-mile bike, 3.1 mile run), and Olympic distance triathlon (1-mile swim, 24-mile bike, 6.2 mile run). Plus there will be a youth race of 100-yard swim, 3.1 mile bike, and 1-mile run after the adult’s tri has taken place. Really, Southern Hills offers something for just about every athlete in the family.
Plus the race committee has demonstrated their dedication to men and women in the service along with aspiring triathletes. High school students, college students, and military members have reduced rates for both the duathlon and the triathlons.
This race venue is really one of South Dakota’s most well-hidden gems. It has the softest and prettiest sand beach we’ve seen of any venue, and the lake is, well, a west-river lake at the foot of the Black Hills: clear and blue. The bike takes participants on the foot hills of the Black Hills, and the run takes place on a hilly but safe bike path, far away from road traffic.
Word on the street has it that this chip-timed race has all the technology of today’s typical race but the hospitable spirit that only folks out west can bring with one of the best homemade post-race spreads on the South Dakota circuit. The Friends of the Library who host this event know how to combine sugar with flour, eggs, and butter to create some pretty great goodies.
Consider taking a tri-cation at Angostura this weekend. You won’t be disappointed in the race, and we’ll be there to catch your best racing side.
